Hoping for a Shutdown

Congress needs to pass a new spending bill before March 14th to avoid a government shutdown. The Republicans have put forward a bill that they think is going to pass, since they control both the House and the Senate. Trump approves of the bill, so we will likely avert a shutdown. The only way we’re going to have a shutdown is if the Democrats in the Senate filibuster. Unfortunately, it looks like the Democrats are too stupid to do that.

Why do I say they would be stupid to avoid a government shutdown? Basically, because avoiding a shutdown would help legitimize the current government. It would show, in a small way, that they are functional and that would be bad.

Why would that be bad? Basically, because the current government is trying really hard to turn the US into a dictatorship. Those of us who don’t want a dictatorship, like the Democrats (at least the Democrats say they don’t want a dictatorship), must do everything we can to show the illegitimacy of this government. If that means a shutdown, so be it.

So, if any of your Representatives or Senators are thinking of voting with the Republicans on this, call and/or email to tell them not to. It’s scary that we have to rely on the Democrats being smart, but every failure Trump takes is a good thing. And every victory Trump gets is a disaster. Let’s remind our elected representatives of that.
