Donald Trump said on Truth Social, “The Republican Party will use its best efforts to eliminate Daylight Saving Time, which has a small but strong constituency, but shouldn’t!” Taking him at his word, which is always dangerous with a BS artist like Trump, I agree. We should end Daylight Savings Time. In other words, we should make Standard Time permanent.
There are a whole host of reasons for this. Number one is human health. All of the doctors who have ever studied this have found that Daylight Savings contributes to everything from mental health disorders to cancer. Their explanation is that Daylight Savings is unnatural. Standard Time is standard time because it better aligns with our circadian rhythms. They’ve even found that these problems are more prevalent at the western side of time zones because it stays lighter later at that part of the zone.
Standard Time is also better than Daylight Savings Time because it means we have more light in the morning. It’s better to have light when we’re trying to wake up than light when we’re trying to go to sleep. Plus, it would be a nightmare trying to send our kids to school in the dark.
I’ve written about this several times before, so I’m not going to go into more detail here. (You can read them here, here, here, and here) Now, I want to talk about the “might” in the title of this piece. It is unclear whether Trump means to keep Standard Time permanent or to keep Daylight Savings Time permanent. If he spoke like a normal person, it would be clear that he wants to keep Standard Time permanent. But we all know he doesn’t speak like a normal person. He seems most upset about the time changes themselves, not which time we adopt.
Plus, Trump’s ally, Marco Rubio, has submitted a bill, which is thankfully stalled, to make Daylight Savings permanent. If that is the path Trump follows, I will vehemently oppose Trump’s plan. But if Trump can be taken at his word and wants Standard Time year-round, I will support him. So, I might agree with him.
It’s weird possibly agreeing with Trump on something. Don’t get me wrong. I still believe Trump is a sad, pathetic, husk of a man. Agreeing with him on one issue doesn’t change that. But it’s still weird. I can live with that, though. We should take a step forward whenever we can. I will continue to oppose, and fight against, everything else on his agenda. They say a broken clock is right twice a day, making Trump far worse than a broken clock. At least he may have one thing right, though.
